What is Public Liability Insurance?

At its most basic level Public Liability Insurance provides protection for businesses, individuals, associations and many others in the event of any bodily injury, death or damage to property suffered by any third party, including members of the public. Although not legally required in Ireland, businesses or anyone who interacts in any way with members of the public should consider buying a policy. Cover is provided for normally at three levels;

  • €1,300,000
  • €2,600,000
  • €6,500,000

While these would be deemed standard industry limits, they can be increased depending on individual requirements. For many individuals or companies such as professionals, contractors and tradesmen, policies can be purchased in isolation.  However for shop owners, offices and manufacturers etc. Liability Insurance comes as part of combined package.

What is Products Liability Insurance?

You might be wondering why Products Liability Insurance is being discussed here. Well in many circumstances Public and Products Liability are combined under the same policy. The Limit of Indemnity provided would match that of the Public Liability section of the policy. Products Liability Insurance provides protection in the event that a third party suffers injury or loss as a result of a product you sold or provided to them. This could as a result of food poisoning from food sold in a shop, restaurant or café.
